Definition
A link with rel="nofollow" attribute. Instructs search engines not to count that link as an endorsement (historically not passing PageRank). Common on user-generated content, ads, or untrusted links.
Why It Matters for SEO
While nofollow links don't directly boost rankings, they drive traffic, contribute to a natural link profile, and can lead to dofollow links indirectly. As of 2019, Google treats nofollow as a "hint" rather than absolute directive.
Best Practices
- Use nofollow on any link that is paid for or not editorially given
- Don't worry if you get nofollow backlinks - they provide value through exposure
- Avoid trying to "sculpt PageRank" with nofollow internally
- Aim for dofollow links for ranking benefit, but appreciate nofollows for traffic and diversity
